A Comparison of Phosphorus Retention in Lakes Determined from Mass Balance and Sediment Core Calculations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Phosphorus retention (TPacc) was determined in 7 lakes in Ontario, Canada from mass balances and from the direct measurement of phosphorus accumulation in the sediments. Phosphorus retentions determined using the mass balance technique ranged between 20 ± 3.9 and 94 ± 23 mg/m/yr and were slightly lower than those calculated by multiplying sediment total phosphorus (TP) concentrations by sediment accumulation rates (49 ± 14 to 135 ± 48 mg/m/yr). The lower TPacc values measured using the mass balance approach may result from the underestimation of external TP inputs. Alternatively, it is suggested that in the more acidic lakes, a decrease in TP concentrations in the lakewaters and/or a decrease in TP export from the catchment may have resulted in a decrease in TPacc through time. Thus, relatively higher TPacc values calculated using the sediment approach (since TPacc values calculated from the sediment data are averaged over a greater number of years than those calculated from the mass balance data). Provided several cores are collected from the lake, the direct measurement of sediment TP and sediment accumulation rates for estimating TPacc may be a suitable alternative to mass balances, especially in situations where it is not possible to measure all inputs of TP to the lake. Laboratory-determined Phosphorus Flux from Lake Sediments as a Measure of Internal Phosphorus Loading
Eutrophication is a water quality issue in lakes worldwide, and there is a critical need to identify and control nutrient sources. Internal phosphorus (P) loading from lake sediments can account for a substantial portion of the total P load in eutrophic, and some mesotrophic, lakes. Laboratory determination of P release rates from sediment cores is one approach for determining the role of inter...
متن کاملThe effect of phosphorus on nitrogen retention in lakes
A hypothesis has been presented that nitrogen retention in lakes has become less efficient at the same time as phosphorus concentrations have decreased due to high phosphorus reduction in wastewater treatment. This might have led to higher loading of nitrogen into the Baltic Sea where nitrogen is considered to be the minimum nutrient. The hypothesis was tested using the mass balance modelling a...
متن کاملPhosphorus Models for Eutrophic Lakes
Abstract--A model is developed for a highly eutrophic lake (White Lake, Michigan) which incorporates both the water and sediment systems and considers two forms of phosphorus--particulate and dissolved. Dynamic interactions of phosphorus between sediments and water are quantified by taking account particulate phosphorus sinking to the sediment-water interface and diffusion of dissolved phosphor...

متن کاملA Holocene Sediment Record of Phosphorus Accumulation in Shallow Lake Harris, Florida (USA) Offers New Perspectives on Recent Cultural Eutrophication
We studied a complete Holocene sediment record from shallow (zmax = 9.7 m) Lake Harris, Florida (USA) to infer the historical development of the lake and its current eutrophic status. We used (210)Pb and (14)C to date the 5.9-m sediment sequence (core LH-6-13) and determined accumulation rates for bulk sediment, organic matter, calcium carbonate, phosphorus fractions and biogenic silica fractio...
